THIS PAGE FOR STEP BY STEP GUIDES TO JOBS IN AND AROUND THE CLASSIC FORD OF YOUR CHOICE
HOW TO MAKE BRAIDED HOSES.

Ok, so you want braided hoses, first job is to buy the bits, you need to find out what threads each component has, be sure when deciding between imperial and metric as 3/8 imperial unions will go in an m10 thread, but it will very likely strip when put under pressure. Next you have to work out how long each bit is. Then you can start to assemble the lines.

here is the main components of a euroquip union.

main union, olive, locking nut and braided hose

slide the locking nut on the hose, if this is tricky wrap the end of the hose in tape to keep the stray ends together.

next you have the flare the outer casing away to reveal the inner hose, the olive goes here so you clear enough hose so the olive sits all the way down.

olive fitted.

next job is to fit the main union, the thin part goes through the olive and into the pipe, make sure the olive doesnt move while doing this and then bring the locking nut up to join.

now you have to get the thread started, this can be tricky as the braided outer is in the way, keep turning the locking nut with pressure towards the main union until the thread catches, carefully wind up the locking nut.

tighten all the way and for neatness try to get the flats of the nuts matched to each other.

JOB DONE! WHATS NEXT?

COILOVER CONVERSION

first job is to get the strut stripped down, remove the top caps, springs and ideally the dampers. if the struts are particularly rusty then it would be a good idea to get them shot-blasted, this will show up any dangerous weaknesses in the legs that is hiding under paint and rust.

so one you have the strut stripped its time to get the spring cup off. use a thin cutting blade and cut just above the weld, DO NOT cut through the strut tube, you dont have to even go all the way through.
cut through almost all the way and then hit the spring cup upward with a suitable hammer, the remaining weld should eventually crack as it now very thin.

next offer up the coilover tube and see how much grinding you need to do to get it over the left over spring cup. just remove enough to get the coilover tube over, this will stabilise the tube over the strut and keep it central.

next job is to weld the tube in place, generally speaking for capri/escort/cortina conversions place the tube 2" down from the strut.
wind the adjusters down to almost the bottom of the thread, these will keep any stray weld and spatter off the threads, put a damp rag over the rest of the threads too.

drill the top cap so the damper top just fits through, then assemble everything together.

ANOTHER JOB DONE.
